The President of the Commemorations Committee on Portugal’s Day, Carmo Caldeira, today challenged society and rulers to start " bold programs" that lead to sustainability in health, social security and the planet.
“It is our duty not to leave these issues suspended for generations to come,” said, during the evocative ceremony of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, presided by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who took place in the Plaza da Autonomia, in Funchal.
" Climate change, the present pandemic and futures require innovative, consequent and urgent approaches that integrate the human in the planet’s ecosystem, which is our home," said Carmo Caldeira, who is a doctor and director of the surgery service of Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, claiming that “it can’t stay everything as before”.
And he said, “We’ll have to rebuild, reintegrate, re-educate.”
“Yes, educating is an imperative in health,” said Carmo Caldeira, for whom the management of pandemic implies “work of all” and “responsibility of the consequences of decisions taken”.
" Inequalities and the degree of social disruption evidenced by pandemic forces us to reflect and mobilize in the preparation of structural policies for the future," he warned, aggravating that the pandemic crisis has strengthened the “relevance of knowledge”, although science does not always present answers.
And he added: “We face times of uncertainty in which each has a role to play for their health and that of others. Health is to prepare, care, educate and this presupposes to empower, enable, accountability, develop in each individual a way of acting with increasing capacity for autonomy, discernment and self-responsibility. "
Carmo Caldeira said the pandemics “determinate societies”.
Covid-19 “suspended our lives, our affections, interrupted our dreams, accentuated the isolation of the elders” said, highlighting the “wedded effort” of health workers and the “important contribution” of the Armed Forces.
“There can be no place to apathy and discouragement. We must mobilize and promote all efforts,” he said, recalling that Portugal is about to complete 900 years and has launched a challenge to Portuguese society and the rulers.
" It is absolutely urgent to start bold and effective programs that lead us to sustainability in health, social security, on the planet,” he said.
