The head of the Order of Dentists (OMD), Miguel Pavão, considered today “historic”, after being approved in the plenary session of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira to create a career in dentistry in the Health Service of the archipelago.
“It is a historic day for dentistry in our country, since it is the first time that dentists integrated into a public service now have a career, like other state employees,” said Miguel Pavão, to Lusa news agency.
In Parliament madeirense was approved today, in final overall vote, unanimously, the regional legislative decree establishing the career of the dentist in the Regional Health Service of Madeira (SESARAM).
Miguel Pavão, who traveled to the Madeira to be present at the plenary and attend the vote of this diploma, said that his approval “is a milestone in the profession”, noting that it was this “Autonomous Region the first to take this step”.
He criticized that the “Government of the Republic has been holding up a similar process on the mainland for several years”.
“The career of dentistry in the NHS received approval several years ago by the Ministry of Health, but the signature of the Minister of Finance is missing, so the dentists in the NHS are hired as service providers,” he added.
Dentists in the Azores also still do not have their own career defined in the public health service, he said.
The new career in dentistry covers all dentists working in health centres in Madeira and Porto Santo and Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal.
In turn, the representative of the OMD in Madeira, Fabião Castro Silva, expressed the “great pride” he feels to be “Madeira to give this step, so significant for the profession”.
“It is a step that completes the full integration of dentistry in SESARAM”, he concluded.
This diploma will allow 12 dentists integrate the health centers of Madeira and two other exercise their profession in Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal.
In 17 March this year, the Secretary of Health and Civil Protection of Madeira, Pedro Ramos, He was in the plenary of the ALM to present the diploma, which was approved, unanimously, in generality, considering it to be a “pioneering measure at national level”.
“For us it means the culmination of a work that has been done for over two years with the Order of Dentists, meaning that the Regional Health Service has worked in recent years to empower and enhance all professional groups, including in pandemic year”, said Pedro Ramos, that day, in the parliament of Madeira.
The diploma was then appreciated in the Parliamentary Health Committee of the parliament of Madeira.
